Facts One Should Know About A Mole Trap

By Ann Davis

Moles are small animals that dig underground tunnels with their front limbs in order for them to reach for food. Their diet is made up mainly of insects. Due to their burrowing skills they mostly live in seclusion underground. Sometimes they come out to the surface to breed but often they come out by accident. Moles spent most of their life time underground hence they have very few predators. That makes the use of a mole trap one of the most effective ways to control invasions.

These animals feed on worms and beetles among other insects. These insects inhabit soil in the ground, which makes moles to cover large areas to locate enough supply. They need a lot of food so that they can be energetic enough to keep up their burrowing activities. They mostly like places with plenty of worms. Such places have loose moist soils.

In some countries, moles are considered as agricultural pests, especially by farmers. They are often caught and killed. Nevertheless, farmers in other countries need permission before killing them. Farmers therefore need to find methods they can use to catch moles and move them to different places instead of killing them. Farmers also control population of moles by using mole snares.

A mole snare is practical and successful at controlling moles. It is a simple tool but one needs to be careful when setting it. This is to prevent accidents that may lead to killing of the mole. It is inhumane for one to kill moles using traps and it is punishable in some countries.

One needs to ensure that they have concrete evidence about mole presence. Presence of tunnels is not enough since some tunnels may have been left weeks back. In such cases, trapping is a waste of time because nothing will be caught. Usually, the setting of the trap should be done in a depressed site. That is the definite site where the moles go through. When the moles touch the upper side of the depression, the trap is triggered and the animal will be caught.

The trap is mostly set at night because that is when mole activities occur. One can examine the trap early in the morning. There are many types of traps depending on peoples need and preference. The most important thing to note when buying one is to ensure that it is safe and does not kill the mole. A person should be also extra careful when setting up the trap so that it does not hurt them.

Moles contaminate soil particles making it to have unpleasant smell thus hard for farm animals such as cows to consume. They burrow a lot covering animal pastures with soil hence reducing the amount of pasture. This will affect animals and young plants a lot hence loss to farmers. They also expose stones that damage farm machinery.

There are several ways one can use to control moles other than trapping. An example is by practicing live trapping. Examining of fresh mole channels is done very early in the morning or at night. An individual then uses a spade to strike the animals when movement is observed in the soil. Flooding of the channels is also another away of driving moles away.
