Guidelines For Municipal Water Treatment In Kenya

By Anthony Patterson

Large-scale aquatic treatment is mandatory to make it safe for different end-use. Most end-use include recreation, drinking, irrigation and other economic activities. Most municipalities have spent a lot of money in this kind of process and have registered success over time. There are many activities that require to be considered to achieve a similar success rate. Below are guidelines for municipal water treatment in Kenya to take into consideration.

Start by acquainting with aspects that affect marine quality. All the aspects that affect aquatic quality are based on environmental factors and human activities. Environmental aspects include sedimentation, runoffs, and soil erosion. On the other hand, human activities that affect marine quality comprises of industrial waste, commercial cleaning activities, household cleaning, and littering and air pollution.

Start with the flocculation and coagulation processes. Commercial aquatic management starts with this process. It involves management using positively charged chemicals to neutralize the negative charge of dissolved particles in the marine. The positive particles form large particles which are regarded as flocs that are removed through filtration or setting.

Use the sedimentation procedure. The sedimentation process follows the flocculation procedure. The aquatic is passed in a large basin at low speed to allow the flocs to settle at the bottom of the basin. The flocs that have settled at the bottom of a basin are called sludge. They are removed using the filtration procedure or manually when the basin is completely dried off.

Ensure that the filtration procedure is handled well. The filtration process is handled after the sedimentation process is completed. The marine is passed via a filter which captures all the solid components. They remain on the filter and are removed using an osmosis process or manually. Common particles that are captured by the filter include sand, gravel, and crushed anthracite particles. This process should be handled well to make the disinfection procedure easy enough.

Take note of the disinfection process. The disinfection procedure can be done through different means. It is considered to remove disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Chlorine is the most used chemical since it is very effective. However, other applications can be made depending on the aquatic quality. Marine that is found on the surface most large aquatic bodies such as lakes, dams, and rivers require intensive chemical treatment due to exposure to a lot of impurities. Besides that, borehole water requires extensive chemical management due to the accumulation of minerals in the soil and pollution.

Provide a consumer confidence report. Municipal aquatic suppliers are expected to provide an annual report related to every aspect that is associated with the water that they supply. It should provide information regarding the aquatic source, management process and various methods that consumers can use to protect themselves from contamination. Such reports increase the rate of confidence of the consumers to their municipality and can comfortably file complaints and expect quick responses.

Instill the consumers on personal aquatic cure processes. The fact that municipal treatment of H2O makes is quite suitable does not guarantee that it is completely safe for usage. Consumers should make their input to be entirely sure about the safety of the marine that they use. They should adopt measures such as regular boiling, filtering, softening and control of PH. Special measures can be considered for people with low immunity and while improving the marine taste.
