Emmitt Nelson Gives Advice On How Employers And Construction Managers Can Uphold Workplace Safety To Prevent Accidents

By Kenneth Powell

There is nothing that worries construction site workers and managers more than the possibility of getting a fall or another similar accident at the workplace. When accidents happen, liabilities follow because you have to pay workers compensation and of not, you may even be sued for negligence. Emmitt Nelson has been working in the construction industry for decades, and has been observing the common accidents which occur in these workplaces. He as a result created a course whose purpose is to make sure that workplaces are kept safe and secure from accidents. Here, are some of the recommendations which are found in his module.

The first and most important thing that the course recommends is proper safety training to all the people on site. When employees are educated on the possible health hazards which could occur at a construction site, they are more likely to maintain the safety at the construction site, than when they do not understand the value of safety. At the same time, they will wear the right safety gear to protect themselves from possible accidents.

The second way that you can make sure everyone on site is adhering to the set safety standards is through frequent crew meetings where safety is discussed. Even if the employees received their preliminary training on safety, time makes them forget the lessons which they learned, and they may start taking safety issues for granted. Regular meetings with the crew will constantly remind them that safety is still very important.

The third reason why accidents happen in the workplace is when the employees are unable to utilize the right gear and equipment. Most of the time, this happens when employees get used to the construction site. They get complacent and start thinking that they can circumvent the safety rules. Emmitt states that making safety clothing a necessity as opposed to an option is the best way to ensure that everyone stays safe.

Another recommendation that he makes to help keep the workspace free from accidents is to always make sure the area is clean. Spilled water and other chemicals need to be cleaned up before they call slip and fall accidents. Sharp tools have to be stored away before they create accidents, and the work area should be decluttered to prevent accidents.

Emmitt observes in his modules that workplace machinery is rarely maintained. The risk of machinery falling apart and causing accidents increases significantly if the machinery is left unchecked and unrepaired for long periods. Managers should create a maintenance schedule for all their equipment and make sure that it is followed to maintain the safety of their employees.

Then, he advises that the most effective way to handle accidents is mapping out the entire workspace, whether a construction site or a warehouse and note down all the possible sources of accidents. When the possible hazards have been mapped out, you can simply put in place measures to mitigate any accidents which will happen thereafter.

With these measures in mind, it will be very easy to transform a working environment from its state into a completely accident free surrounding. The most important thing is to map out the workplace, and to prepare the employees to safeguard their safety.
