Effective Ways To Counter Human Trafficking

By Jeffrey Butler

Public proclamations on the end of slavery are deceitful by causing the masses to assume that human trafficking came to an end. Unfortunately, it is still thriving underground. It takes individual and community effort to counter human trafficking in its present day format. Here are ways to help stop this vice.

Only deal with agents, employees or service providers who show formal papers. Most persons who have been trafficked lack formal identification documents. They give excuses why they do not have the documents when seeking employment or public services. Should you encounter such a person, insist on formal papers and report to authorities if they are lacking. They could have been intimidated into silence.

Pile pressure on corporate bodies to take a stand and put in place measures to curb this problem within their systems. A public declaration sends shock waves in the industry and stops activities that could be taking place underground. People working for such an organization are also enjoined in the campaign. The organizations push their associates, clients and suppliers to also adapt similar stands. This closes down opportunities for traffickers.

Provide opportunities to those freed from the vice. People who have been trafficked face difficult challenges integrating into the society after release. Some remain trapped in slavery because they do not see an alternative to this slavery. Employers who provide an option those released become a part of the team building hope. It gives courage to others to ditch slavery because they know that the world has options for them.

Sensitization campaigns should be run at local level to raise awareness. The aim of these activities should be to sensitize the community on their role in ending the problem. There are local organizations and religious groups working towards the same end. Join them or involve them to make the message louder. They need to know how to address any issue that arises, especially how to spot victims and help them.

Take a step as a professional wherever you are working. Trafficking victims will seek such services as legal representation, medical help, the need for their stories to be highlighted on the media or action taken against perpetrators of these atrocities, among others. Help them by being more sensitive to their demands. It brings them closer to finding justice.

Do not entertain this wickedness at personal level. This is especially important for employers and consumers. Only take in persons whose identity and status is verifiable. Buy goods and consume services from organizations that have taken a stand and put measures in place to end the vice. In case you come across such a case, report it to authorities. People around you must know that you do not condone this evil.

Publicize the issue of human trafficking and make everyone aware of the need to stop it. Individuals must know that they are the beginning of the end to such evil. Take every opportunity you get to create a different situation. Help the victims and participate in stopping continued spread of the problem.
