Macular degeneration, which is rather abbreviated as AMRD or even AMD, can be described as the condition whereby the macula becomes deteriorated. However, medics argue that nutritional intervention can be of significant help especially in the prevention of the progression of the dry condition into the wet form.

This problem could also be addressed through a method of treatment referred to as macugen. Compared to the former method that involved injections after one month, in this case it is done after six weeks. This method had lesser case of adverse side effects such as the retina becoming totally detached but very minor side effects such as discomfort were observed in about a quarter of the fraction of patients.

For the patients with new growth of blood vessels under the retina visudyne is best recommended for them. It is injected in their arm and will go through the vessels and shine low energy beam to the eye and destroy the abnormal ones.

There is also the use of laser alone where the aim is killing these vessels and have them totally sealed off such that the eye has a reduced risk of wet type of the ailment. However the problem with this method is that the eye could be scarred and these results in blindness in the future which the experts are working to see how this can be reduced.
