If your home locks are not keyed alike or have multiple locks on each door, having a locksmith do the work can get expensive.

With a do it yourself kit you are able to do the same job as professionals for less money. The lock kits come in all popular brands. Keep in mind that these kits are not always compatible so it is important to choose the one that works with the brands in your home. If your lucky all the locks in your home are the same brand.

A single kit can be used to change six locks. You are able to order additional pins if you will need to change more locks. These kits work for deadbolt and entrance locks and come with two keys. The kit also comes with the tools you will need except the screwdriver and tweezers. Make sure you keep the current keys since you will need to use them to remove the cylinder in the lock.

Use the right kit for the brand of lock you have. Check your instructions in case they are different between these directions. First, take the knob off using the wire provided in the kit. Insert the wire in the hole on the knob and depress the clip. Now you can pull off the knob. Next, insert your key and turn until unlocked. Finally, take the knob and lock cylinder off.

The kit comes with a tool to remove the retainer ring by pushing against and popping out the ring from the cylinder. Use the tool to pry the slim ring from the cylinder. Make sure you keep the ring so you can put it back on later. Now take the retainer ring off.

Next remove the cylinder plug. Insert the key and turn it to the right or left. This lets you remove the plug with the plug follower from the kit. Push the follower through the cylinder to remove the plug. You need to keep pressure between the follower and the plug to prevent the springs and the pins from popping out.

Once the pins are removed, insert the key from the kit. Use tweezers and color guide in the kit to match the new pins and insert into the cylinder. When this step is finished work in reverse to reassemble the lock. Before you begin this project make sure to have all the tools at your finger tips.
